"Storage Containers"
I love storage containers! In fact, I am so addicted to them that I use the promise of buying a new container to get myself to sort and purge particular messy corners of my house.
Storage containers come in all colors, materials and sizes and are a wonderful way to get and stay organized. They contain things and look neat with it. You can use them in every room of your house (and the garage, garden and car!). You can get tiny ones to hold contact lenses or pills to huge ones to deal with pool toys, bulk food storage or pet food.
And they are soooo pretty....
Try to find some that fit with the overall decorating theme of your house. For example, enamel pots or old glass jars work wonderful for country kitchens. Before you buy anything, do an inventory. Look at what it is you want to store, and what size you have available to do so.
I find it very useful to pack similar things in the same type of container. For example use the same type of box to store your christmas and easter decorations. This way, they fit neatly on the same shelf and you know immediately that this particular type of box contains decoration material. Also, when buying storage, see that they are stackable, have a lid that is attached to the box so it doesn't get lost, and that they are easily portable. Some bigger containers come with little wheels underneath them, very handy. If you want to you can also attach wheels yourself.
To store food, glass containers are best. They don't take on the smell of the food and are easy to clean. It is however difficult to find very big glass containers. They are expensive and they are heavy. So to store bulk food, be it flour, pasta or breakfast cereal, large plastic storage containers are best. Those also work wonderful to store pet food.
Now, how do you know what is in your containers? You can of course buy see-through ones, but labelling is still advisable, also to help other family members with finding the stuff they are looking for.
I started to paint a strip of blackboard paint on the front of most of my tins, glasses, boxes and containers. To do that, paint one thin layer, let it try for an hour or so, then paint another layer and maybe a third one, depending on the material and your patience.

for a detailed description of the process. Now you can use crayons to write on what is stored inside. And if you want to use the container for something else, just wipe it off and add a new label. Very handy and beautiful!
You can even make your own storage containers. Keep old tins in different sizes, paint them white or eggshell color (or any other color you like). Once the paint is dry, put a blackboard paint label on.
And then enjoy the beautiful sight!
